This site has been considered sacred since prehistoric times. The Sleeping Giant is a two-mile long, 740-foot tall basalt mountain that looks just
like a man lying down on his back. Native Americans believed the mountain was a living presence, and even today people speak of the mountain
as if it were a person. Legend says the mountain is really an evil giant by the name of Hobbomock, who was put to sleep to prevent him from
doing any more damage to the area.

There is also a ghost seen on this same mountains' hiking trails. On the top of the mountain where the castle is located, there is the ghost of a
man who is dressed in all black. He looks just like a normal person, except he seems to have a white ring around his left arm. If you approach
this spirit, he simply evaporates into thin air. People who have witnessed the ghost once, have haunted for the mysterious figure again, but no
one has been able to see him more than once.

Take exit 38 off I-95 and follow it to the town of Hamden. The park is located two miles outside of town on Whitney Avenue. For information,
contact the Sleeping Giant Park Association, P.O. Box 14, Quinnipiac College, Hamden, CT 06518. The telephone number of the ranger
station on the mountain is 203-789-7498.
