Many people do not know that gravestone carvings do have meanings. My book The Gravestone Dictionary is a huge
inventory of carvings, meanings, and many many pictures and examples. This section in the Tangled Forest is a very abbreviated version, but still has many examples from the dictionary. The book will be available in the near future.
Acorn: Life, fertility, and immorality
Angels: Protection and spiritiuality
Angel flying or trumpeting: Rebirth, resurrection, and eternal life.
Bell: Mourning
Book or bible: Everlasting faith
Candle: Divine light of Christ
Chain w/ three links: the Holy Trinity
Coffin: Morality
Crown: Glory of life after death.
Dove: Soul at peace.
Drapery: Mourning or moratlity
Eye of God: God the all seeing.
Hands: Usually seen in the four positions listed below.
Blessing: blessing those left behind
Clasped: farewells, or the bond of marriage
Pointing up: pathway to heaven
Praying: asking God for eternal life
Harp: Praise the lord.
Hourglass: the passage of life.
Lamb: Innocence, commonly used on childrens graves
Masonic compass and set squares: Freemasons, uprightness, and judgement.
Moon: Death, rebirth, and victory.
